The United States Congress designated the Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness (map) in 2002 and it now has a total of 6,050 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Nevada and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. <br />
<br />
The name Joshua tree was given by a group of Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century. The tree's unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer. Ranchers and miners who were contemporary with the Mormon immigrants also took advantage of the Joshua tree, using the trunks and branches as fencing and for fuel for ore-processing steam engines

Haw Creek Falls is located in Haw Creek campground of the Bayou Ranger District of the Ozark National Forest. The small steam contains the falls which are only a short walk on an access trail suitable for physically disabled visitors. The falls are only about 5 feet high at the most, but are very picturesque even with low water. Located nearby is Big Piney Wild and Scenic River and access to the Ozark Highlands Trial.

Poteau Oklahoma Balloon Fest 2009. Taken during what is called a “balloon glow”. A hot air balloon glow is when the balloons are set up and inflated at night or dusk, and the pilots light the inside of the balloon with the propane burner used to create the hot air that causes the balloons to fly. The flames from the burner cause the colorful balloon envelopes to glow in the dark. The balloons due not actually take off, so the pilots can only run the burner for a short time and then let it cool down to keep from lifting off.

Groom Texas is the site of the the largest free standing cross in the western hemisphere, located along interstate 40 in Groom Texas. The cross was erected in 1995, and is 19 stories, or 190 feet tall. The giant cross can be seen from as far as 25 miles away and seen by millions of motorists every year. Sandstone Bluffs overlook an ancient lava flow at El Malpais National Monument near Grant New Mexico. The area has had volcanic activity dating from 115,000 years ago to as recent as 3000 years ago. Puebloan Indians have lived in the area for 10,000 years and continue their ancestral uses, including gathering herbs and medicines and other ceremonial activities.<br />

El Malpais National Monument is new to the National Park System, having been established in 1987, it contains 114,277 acres. El Malpais translates to "the badlands" in Spanish and is pronounced Mal-(rhymes with wall)-pie-ees.

Cool Springs camp along in western Arizona was built in the mid-1920s and was a major stop on Route 66. In the mid-1960s a fire burned cool Springs to the ground leaving only parts of the stone foundation and pillars. In 2001 Ned Leuchtner purchased the property of Cool Springs and began to restore the old station, which serves as a museum and gift shop for route 66 travelers.

Old murals painted on the St. Cloud Hotel located on Route 66 in Chandler Oklahoma is in need of repair and restoration. The building was built in 1903 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The St. Cloud Hotel opened April 24, 1904, part of "Gormley's Block," the 1200<br />
block on the east side of Manvel Avenue. The property of John Edward Gormley, a<br />
Chandler pioneer, the St. Cloud was noted for its elegance and for its elevator,<br />
the first in the town. It competed successfully with Chandler's other hotels. The<br />
upper floors were intended to serve as the town hospital but no record of such<br />
service exists. During World War I the Oklahoma National Guard leased rooms in the<br />
hotel for administrative offices and officers' quarters. It was later owned by<br />
honeybee and pecan processors and served as a warehouse, a cabinet maker's shop,<br />
and a garment factory.

However, as many locals began to come to enjoy its cool waters, Davis brought in tons of sand, built picnic tables, hired life guards, and opened his masterpiece to the public.

A panoramic view of Point of Rocks, in the Cimarron National Grassland, near Elkhart Kansas, serves as a reminder of the Dust Bowl or the Dirty Thirties.<br />
Years of cattle grazing and farming, followed by a drought, degraded the soils and made them unproductive. By the 1930s many acres were barren. The strong winds that blow across the prairie swept up the loose soil, creating huge dust and sand storms. This area was part of the Dust Bowl, an area that covered parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, named for the great dust storms. Morton County, where part of Cimarron National Grassland is, was one of the most devastated areas.<br />
<br />
<br />
The U.S. government wanted to stabilize the soil so the land could be used again for agriculture. Healthy grasslands reduce soil erosion and water runoff and provide a dependable supply of summer forage for livestock and wildlife. The U.S. Congress approved the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act in 1937, allowing the government to buy some of this unproductive land with loose soil. The land was first administered by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and in 1954 was turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The former Point of Rocks Ranch became Cimarron National Grassland in 1960. It is the largest tract of public land in Kansas.

Lake Lucero is contained within the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. The lake is noted for the unusually high quantity of water-deposited and wind deposited gypsum dissolved in its intermittent waters. Annual evaporation cycles have caused much of the gypsum to precipitate into crystals of impure, brownish selenite that line the alkaline mudflats of the lakeshore. The further process of gypsum erosion abrades the fragile selenite, and other precipitated gypsum, into the pure-white sands covering most of the national monument.

Located off Hwy 550 near the crest of Red Mountain Pass—this is the site of the National Bell Mine. During its booming years, there were as many as 10,000 inhabitants living in Red Mountain Town. In all of its glory, it had over 100 businesses, a post office, jail, schools, newspapers, saloons and gambling halls. Winters were extremely rough and only the most rugged individuals stayed. Several fires between 1892 and 1937 nearly leveled the town. However, regardless how difficult the environment, over thirty million dollars in gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper has been taken out of this area. You can overlook this town site from Hwy 550 at the Idarado Mine turnoff or park your car at the Red Mountain Pass area and hike into the town site.

Pensacola Bay viewed from the top of the Pensacola Lighthouse. The Pensacola Light remains an active aid to navigation. As of 2009, the lighthouse opened on a limited basis for public tours, and since early 2011 it has been open 7 days a week. Maintenance and tour operations are currently conducted by the Pensacola Lighthouse Association. The 1869 keeper's quarters, adjacent to the lighthouse tower, houses a museum and gift shop also administered by the Pensacola Lighthouse Association.
