A lone windmill in the rolling fields of the Palouse. The Palouse Is a region of where there are no continuous valleys, and the hills do not connect to make long ridges. These hills were not created by rivers and streams, as is most of our landscape, but formed more like sandunes, with winds depositing silt to form of some of the most fertile soil in the country.

Red Oak II is the creation of artist Lowell Davis, who's family had pioneered the town of Red Oak. After success as an artist, he started moving his old home town to his farm 32 miles away creating Red Oak II. Lowell now lives in what he considers his "Masterpiece" in the Belle Starr house where the famous outlaw was raised. Red Oak II is located a few miles Northeast of Carthage Missouri, just off Route 66.

A dust storm at Point of Rocks, in the Cimarron National Grassland, near Elkhart Kansas, serves as a reminder of the Dust Bowl or the Dirty Thirties.<br />
Years of cattle grazing and farming, followed by a drought, degraded the soils and made them unproductive. By the 1930s many acres were barren. The strong winds that blow across the prairie swept up the loose soil, creating huge dust and sand storms. This area was part of the Dust Bowl, an area that covered parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, named for the great dust storms. Morton County, where part of Cimarron National Grassland is, was one of the most devastated areas.<br />
<br />
<br />
The U.S. government wanted to stabilize the soil so the land could be used again for agriculture. Healthy grasslands reduce soil erosion and water runoff and provide a dependable supply of summer forage for livestock and wildlife. The U.S. Congress approved the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act in 1937, allowing the government to buy some of this unproductive land with loose soil. The land was first administered by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and in 1954 was turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The former Point of Rocks Ranch became Cimarron National Grassland in 1960. It is the largest tract of public land in Kansas.

The most extensive historic complex remaining on Mormon Row is the Andy Chambers homestead. Andy Chambers claimed land in 1912 and secured the title under the Homestead Act by building a log cabin and stable and clearing ground to grow grain, a backbreaking chore in the rocky soil. The family lacked running water until 1927 and harnessed electricity with a windmill in 1946. The Rural Electric Administration did not provide power to Mormon Row until the 1950s. By this time, many families had sold their homesteads to become part of the park. The windmill still stands on the homestead.
